Costa Rica Golf courses in the Central Valley and at the Beach

Costa Rica has quickly established a reputation as one of the newest and hottest golf destinations in the world. Challenging courses have been built around the country, designed by some of the sport’s top names: Arnold Palmer, Robert Trent Jones, Mike Young and George Fazio.

Keeping in line with Costa Rica’s image as an ecological destination, the development of Costa Rica golf courses has been in tune with the country’s conservation policies. Many of the newest courses are nestled within forests and observe the ecological balance of the regions in which they are built. Some designers and developers have made an all-out effort to protect the environment, using specific grass types that can be maintained with salt water, or converting unused cattle grazing lands into magnificent fairways.

Costa Rican laws regulate development in protected areas, primarily beachfront property, and thus golf courses in Costa Rica are not clustered in one region, but located throughout the country in different areas. If you are looking to experience several of the magnificent Costa Rica golf courses in several regions, you will have to do advance planning. Some golfers prefer to play a few courses during their vacation, and others prefer to purchase a golf and resort package similar to those offered by the Four Seasons Resort, and play on one course several times.

Three regions in Costa Rica offer championship courses. In the Central Valley, near the capital San Jose, thee options are available, including one located at a private country club. Within the Pacific province of Guanacaste, there are four golf courses in the northwest regions of Tamarindo and Papagayo, while a 9-hole course is available in the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula. Finally, an excellent course can be played in the Central Pacific, in the Playa Herradura resort region.
